Emmy Award-winning actor Timothy Busfield was held without bond following his surrender to authorities to confront child sex abuse charges. These accusations arose from claims of inappropriate conduct towards a minor while he was directing a TV series in New Mexico.
Appearing remotely through a video link from jail, Busfield, who was arrested the previous day, did not offer any comments during the brief court session and was not required to enter a plea. A detention hearing to determine his jail status will be arranged within five business days.
Scheduled for January 29, a preliminary hearing is set to address the Albuquerque police’s warrant against Busfield, accusing him of two counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor and one count of child abuse during the filming of the series “The Cleaning Lady” in Albuquerque.
Although married to actor Melissa Gilbert and recognized for roles in “The West Wing,” “Field of Dreams,” and “Thirtysomething,” Busfield has contested the allegations, denouncing them as falsehoods in a video shared before his surrender.
Prosecutors are pushing to keep Busfield in custody until trial, citing a documented history of sexual misconduct, authoritative abuse, and grooming behavior spanning two decades. The prosecution’s motion highlights concerns about retaliation and professional repercussions expressed by witnesses.
Emphasizing the potential for offenders to exploit authority and evade accountability, prosecutors argue that no release conditions can adequately protect the victims or the community based on Busfield’s demonstrated behavior.
The decision on the detention request is pending a judge’s ruling, with a hearing date yet to be confirmed. Prosecutors also criticized Busfield for releasing a video to TMZ, suggesting a focus on personal narrative control rather than court compliance.
The criminal complaint details instances where Busfield allegedly touched a child on multiple occasions, prompting fear in the victim due to Busfield’s position as director. The child’s twin brother also reported being touched but did not disclose details, fearing consequences.
Reported to have occurred between November 2022 and spring 2024, the abuse was revealed to Child Protective Services by the twins’ mother. Busfield denied the allegations during a police interview, attributing them to animosity resulting from the children’s replacement on the series.
The investigation commenced in November 2024 following a doctor’s report from the University of New Mexico Hospital, after the boys’ parents sought advice from a law firm. Despite an independent investigation by Warner Bros. failing to substantiate the claims, prosecutors argue that crucial witnesses were not interviewed by the investigator.
