“Quieter Atlantic Hurricane Season Predicted by U.S. Experts”

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) has predicted a quieter Atlantic hurricane season for this year. The forecast suggests there will be between eight and 14 named storms, with three to six potentially becoming hurricanes. Among these, one to three could escalate to major hurricanes, falling within Category 3 to Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Comparing this forecast to the 30-year average spanning from 1991 to 2020, which typically saw 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes, indicates a below-average season ahead. The Atlantic hurricane season typically spans from June 1 to Nov. 30.

The reason behind this below-average projection is attributed to the anticipated impact of El Niño, which some models anticipate will be notably robust. El Niño conditions often result in heightened wind shear across the Atlantic Ocean, a factor that can disrupt storm formation. Notably, warm ocean temperatures globally, particularly in the mid-Atlantic where hurricanes originate, have reached record highs due to climate change. These warm waters serve as the energy source for hurricane development.

While these warm waters persist, the introduction of excess heat from continued fossil fuel emissions into the atmosphere further exacerbates warming trends. Despite the below-average forecast, experts emphasize the need for vigilance and preparedness, underscoring the importance of readiness regardless of the predicted hurricane intensity.

In contrast, NOAA’s forecast for the Pacific region anticipates an above-average hurricane season with projections of 15 to 22 storms, comprising nine to 14 named storms and five to nine major hurricanes.

In the previous year, the Atlantic saw 13 named storms, five hurricanes, and four major hurricanes, with no hurricanes making landfall in the U.S. However, these storms resulted in 125 fatalities and incurred $503 million in damages. Notably, the final hurricane of the season, Melissa, made landfall in Jamaica as a catastrophic Category 5 storm, claiming numerous lives and causing substantial economic losses.

Experts caution that as climate change continues to influence weather patterns, the frequency and intensity of major hurricanes may escalate. The remnants of Hurricane Melissa also impacted Atlantic Canada, underscoring the far-reaching effects of these weather events.

NOAA officials stress the importance of maintaining preparedness and vigilance, emphasizing the need to remain vigilant irrespective of the forecast or the perceived strength of incoming hurricanes.
