“Winter Storm Hits Nova Scotia, Schools Closed, Flights Cancelled”

A significant winter storm hit Nova Scotia, leading to the closure of schools and universities and the cancellation of numerous flights at Halifax’s airport. The storm, expected to continue into Tuesday, could bring over 40 centimeters of snow to certain areas. Public schools, post-secondary campuses, including Dalhousie University, and Nova Scotia Community College campuses shut down. The provincial government offices also closed. Public Works Minister Fred Tilley mentioned that around 400 snow-clearing equipment pieces were in operation. The northeast of the province, particularly Cape Breton, is likely to receive an additional 15 to 25 cm of snow by Tuesday evening. Other regions such as the Annapolis Valley, Hants, and Halifax counties may expect 5 to 15 cm of snow. Halifax Mayor Andy Fillmore emphasized the necessity of keeping transit systems operational amidst the challenges of clearing over 4,300 kilometers of streets and 1,000 kilometers of sidewalks. Nova Scotia Power lifted the energy conservation warning issued due to a cold snap, ensuring minimal power outages. Despite improvements in power infrastructure, concerns remain after a recent storm caused significant power disruptions. Nova Scotia Power is investing $1.3 billion to enhance reliability and prevent future outages caused by adverse weather conditions.
