“Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area Revitalizes Mississauga Waterfront”

A long-anticipated waterfront conservation area in Mississauga is nearing completion after over ten years of planning. The Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area has revitalized a previously industrialized section of the shoreline into a vast green space. Named in honor of the late Mississauga councilor Jim Tovey, known for his dedication to environmental preservation, the 26-hectare conservation area is situated along the eastern shoreline of Mississauga near the growing mixed-use community of Lakeview Village. Opening to the public on May 30, the area’s transformation involved repurposing excess soil and construction debris from around Peel Region to reclaim the site, which was once home to a coal-fired power plant.

Stephen Dasko, the city councilor for Ward 1 in Mississauga, emphasized the importance of converting the formerly abused industrial waterfront into a sustainable and green space. The project, aimed at restoring nature and the environment, aims to set a standard for future conservation efforts. The collaboration with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation ensured an Indigenous theme throughout the conservation area, which includes educational spaces and an Indigenous Teaching Amphitheatre.

The $60-million project, a joint effort between Credit Valley Conservation, Peel Region, and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, has resulted in a network of trails, boardwalks, lookouts, and gathering spots, promoting connectivity and restoration along the shoreline. Scott Cafarella, the manager of capital projects at Credit Valley Conservation, highlighted the area’s significance in reconnecting people with nature and wildlife. The conservation area, boasting wetlands, forested areas, and meadows, has already seen the return of various species, including birds, beavers, and coyotes.

Freyja Whitten, the program manager for terrestrial restoration at Credit Valley Conservation, mentioned ongoing efforts to plant trees and manage habitats to foster new ecosystems within the conservation area. The project’s impact on habitat restoration and the return of wildlife signifies a long-term commitment to environmental sustainability. Positioned within the Head of the Lake Treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the conservation area serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving natural spaces amidst urban development.
