This storm marked the fourth confirmed tornado in the region since early May, with previous ones occurring near Lucan, south London, and Melbourne.
Several farmers shared with CBC News the challenges they faced due to the extreme weather events. Hope Parks of Parks Blueberries in Bothwell, Ont., mentioned the damage caused by hail on their bushes and fruits, impacting their blueberry crop. Similarly, Adrian Jacques of Sunshine Farms in Thamesville, Ont., noted hail damage to their cucumber and asparagus crops.
Both farmers expressed surprise at the frequency of storms during the growing season, highlighting the unpredictability of weather conditions. Despite the setbacks, they remain optimistic about the future of their crops.
Embracing the Heat
Environment Canada issued an orange-level heat warning for most of southwestern Ontario, forecasting maximum temperatures up to 37°C over the weekend, with humidex values ranging from 33 to 44°C. Some farmers, like Roy Phillips of Phillips’ Family Farm, are welcoming the heat, considering it beneficial for their crops.
Roy Phillips, who cultivates sweet corn and pumpkins in London, Ont., emphasized the importance of dry weather for agricultural crops. He mentioned the challenges faced earlier in the season due to cold weather but expressed optimism about the current hot spell benefiting their crops.
Despite the varying impacts of extreme weather on crops, farmers like Matt Roberts from Adelaide Farms in Arva, Ont., acknowledge the potential changes in produce size and availability. Roberts mentioned that weather fluctuations may lead to smaller peppers and early harvesting to ensure product availability.
Overall, consumers may notice delays or fluctuations in the availability of certain produce due to the weather conditions affecting crop growth and harvesting schedules.
