Twelve states have filed a lawsuit to block the $81-billion US merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, arguing that the deal would eliminate competition in Hollywood, resulting in fewer choices for consumers nationwide. California Attorney General Rob Bonta, leading the case, stated that the merger would lead to increased prices, reduced content variety, and lower quality entertainment for audiences.
The combination of Paramount and Warner Bros. would bring together two of the last five legacy studios in Hollywood, including Warner’s popular HBO Max and content libraries like “Harry Potter” and CNN, under Paramount’s ownership. The states involved in the lawsuit, including California, Arizona, Colorado, and others, are urging both companies to halt the merger until the judicial process is complete. If not, the coalition will seek a temporary restraining order.
Paramount responded by stating that the lawsuit misinterprets antitrust law and defended that the merger would create a stronger competitor against dominant streaming platforms. Warner chose not to comment on the matter. The lawsuit comes at a crucial time for the merger, which had received shareholder approval and government clearance, with the companies aiming to finalize the deal in the near future.
