John Fraser Selected as Ontario Liberal Interim Leader for Third Time

The Ontario Liberal caucus has chosen John Fraser as their selection for interim leader, a position he is set to assume for the third time. According to the party’s rules, the riding association presidents and executive council still need to vote on this decision. However, the Ontario Liberal Party president informed members in a communication today that Fraser has been put forward by the caucus. President Kathryn McGarry mentioned in the message that comprehensive details regarding a leadership competition will be disclosed by February 9.

Bonnie Crombie stepped down as Liberal leader last week after receiving lukewarm backing in a leadership evaluation in the autumn. Despite leading the party to reclaim its official party status and increasing its seat count during last year’s sudden election, Crombie and the Liberals remained in third place, with Crombie failing to secure her own seat.

Fraser, who has represented Ottawa South since 2013, previously served as interim leader when former premier Kathleen Wynne resigned in 2018 and again following Steven Del Duca’s departure after the 2022 election loss.
