The artist known as Mystikal, originally named Michael Lawrence Tyler, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for committing third-degree rape at his Louisiana residence in 2022. Mystikal, a rapper who garnered numerous Grammy nominations in the early 2000s, accepted a plea deal in March that led to the 20-year sentence. This sentence was five years less than the maximum penalty for the offense, which would have been life imprisonment if convicted of first-degree rape.
Prior to his sentencing, Mystikal attempted to retract his guilty plea, claiming he had not fully considered the consequences. The victim, who addressed the court before the sentencing, urged the judge to impose the maximum sentence on Mystikal. She detailed how the rapper had physically assaulted her, including punching, choking, and forcibly raping her at his Prairieville home, located approximately 29 kilometers from Baton Rouge.
Mystikal has been in custody at the Ascension Parish Jail since his arrest in 2022, with no bond granted. The Louisiana-based artist gained fame in the 1990s and achieved national acclaim with his 2000 hit song “Shake Ya A**,” which received a Grammy nomination for best rap solo performance.
In 2003, Mystikal pleaded guilty to sexual battery, leading to a six-year prison sentence. That same year, he was also a Grammy nominee in two categories for his album “Tarantula” and single “Bouncin’ Back (Bumpin’ Me Against The Wall).”
