“Artemis II Astronauts Inspire Canada with Moon Mission”

Prime Minister Mark Carney extended a warm welcome to the Artemis II astronauts during their visit to Ottawa. He commended their recent journey around the moon, highlighting how it has been a source of inspiration for the entire nation. Carney emphasized the importance of teamwork, dedication, courage, and human ingenuity displayed by the crew, stating that their mission marked just the beginning of extraordinary possibilities.

The Artemis II crew, comprising Canadian astronauts Jeremy Hansen and Jenni Gibbons, along with NASA astronauts commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, and mission specialist Christina Koch, are currently in Ottawa and Montreal to share insights from their mission. The astronauts are engaging in various public events, interacting with students, connecting with stakeholders in the Canadian space sector, and participating in a few select interviews.

The Artemis II mission, where the crew circled the moon and returned to Earth, set a new record for human space exploration. This mission serves as a crucial step in NASA’s ambitious plan to not only return humans to the moon but also lay the groundwork for future crewed missions to Mars.

Despite the risks involved, Carney acknowledged the astronauts’ bravery and highlighted the mission’s potential to unlock significant opportunities. Hansen expressed his gratitude for the warm reception in Ottawa after their space journey, emphasizing Canada’s capabilities on the global stage. He presented Carney with a framed maple leaf patch that flew with the crew during their mission.

In return, Carney presented Hansen with the Canadian flag that flew over Parliament’s Peace Tower on the day the Orion spacecraft completed its mission. The crew also engaged in a public event at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, discussing humanity’s return to the moon and engaging with young attendees. During the event, Hansen reflected on the crew’s unity in overcoming challenges, drawing parallels to global relationships and emphasizing the importance of interdependence.

The crew later attended a discussion at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec, where they shared further insights about their mission with parliamentarians and other stakeholders. The astronauts’ visit continues to inspire and showcase Canada’s contribution to space exploration on a broader scale.
