After coming across a 2020 BuzzFeed News report detailing China’s construction of extensive detention camps for ethnic-minority Uyghurs, Guan Heng, a YouTuber residing in Henan, China at the time, took it upon himself to investigate further. In October 2021, he ventured into Xinjiang province and utilized a telephoto lens to capture footage of the secretive camps, which human rights organizations estimate imprison up to one million Uyghurs.
The video evidence he gathered set off a chain of events that led to his escape from China, a journey to the U.S. via Ecuador and the Bahamas, and eventually being caught up in an Immigration Customs and Border (ICE) operation last summer. Five years since the start of his ordeal, a U.S. judge has approved Guan’s asylum application.
Guan’s lawyer, Chen Chuangchuang, highlighted his client’s compelling testimony that substantiated the reasons behind his departure from China and his actions. According to Chen, Guan felt compelled to take action after noticing alarming occurrences during his travels to Xinjiang in 2019.
This turn of events underscores the importance of Guan’s actions and the subsequent legal battle that culminated in the recent asylum decision in his favor.
