A community in southwestern Nova Scotia came together on Sunday to honor a 13-year-old who tragically lost his life in a dog attack. The gathering at a community center in Shelburne, N.S., saw people seated in rows of folding chairs, with flowers, photos of Drew Nickerson, and a light blue-tired bicycle displayed at the front. As Nickerson’s family entered, Rev. Shawn Hatfield expressed the community’s profound sorrow, describing how everyone was deeply affected by the boy’s passing.
The ceremony was attended by a mix of family members, former teachers, classmates, friends, and soccer teammates, all sharing fond memories of Nickerson. One teacher highlighted his kindness, empathy, sweetness, and insatiable curiosity about the world. His stepmother, Parise Jeffrey, emotionally expressed the difficulty of bidding farewell to him.
An obituary from H.M. Huskilson’s funeral home portrayed Nickerson as a generous soul who often shared his lunch money with other children, even if it meant borrowing money. The service showcased photos and videos capturing Nickerson’s love for swimming, riding ATVs, and participating in motocross.
Members of his soccer team, Southwest Blast FC, praised Nickerson’s passion for the sport, especially his joy in winning an under-13 championship. The RCMP confirmed that two Cane Corsos and a Rottweiler were responsible for the fatal attack on Nickerson while he was cycling on Upper Sandy Cove Road in Welshtown. All three dogs were euthanized following the incident.
After being rushed to a Halifax hospital post-attack, Nickerson succumbed to his injuries on January 5. The community rallied behind his family, raising nearly $150,000 through a GoFundMe campaign that initially aimed to collect $40,000. Nickerson’s aunt expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from across Canada during the funeral proceedings.
