EU Considers “Trade Bazooka” Against Trump Coercion

In a recent interview, Swedish MEP Karin Karlsbro emphasized the need for concrete actions when dealing with U.S. President Donald Trump. European leaders are currently at odds with Trump over his repeated threats to acquire Greenland, a move vehemently opposed by the people of Greenland and Denmark, a NATO ally.

Following Trump’s announcement of imposing a 10% tariff on EU countries opposing his Greenland takeover plans, the EU is considering retaliatory measures, including the use of the Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), dubbed the “trade bazooka.” Karlsbro, advocating for a strong stance, highlighted the importance of employing this instrument to deter coercion from the U.S.

The “trade bazooka” strategy aims to demonstrate credible deterrence by collectively responding to economic threats against any EU member state. This approach mirrors NATO’s Article 5 principle of collective defense. Despite some EU members’ reservations, Karlsbro stressed the necessity of unified action to counter U.S. coercion effectively.

The potential impact of deploying the trade bazooka includes imposing tariffs on key U.S. sectors and investments. Karlsbro emphasized the need for a robust response to Trump’s actions, highlighting that passivity could lead to further escalation. The objective is to send a clear message to Trump that coercive tactics will not be tolerated.

While originally designed as a response to potential Chinese actions, the idea of using the trade bazooka against the U.S. reflects the current strained relationship between the EU and its significant trading partner and ally. Despite the challenging situation, Karlsbro remains hopeful for a shared future between the EU and the U.S.

Regarding reports of Canadian troops potentially being sent to Greenland, Karlsbro emphasized the importance of cooperation among Denmark, Greenland, and the EU for a united front. She dismissed Trump’s alleged motivations related to the Nobel Peace Prize, labeling them as baseless.

In addressing the escalating situation, Karlsbro underscored the importance of taking Trump seriously and responding decisively using the trade bazooka and reinforcing military presence within the NATO framework. By demonstrating solidarity and a firm stance against coercion, the EU aims to prevent any attempts to change borders through force or threats, safeguarding the global order.
