U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 10% import tax on goods from eight European countries starting in February, escalating tensions over American control of Greenland. Trump’s threat, made from his golf club in West Palm Beach, Fla., targeted Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. The tariff could increase to 25% on June 1 if there is no agreement for the “Complete and Total purchase of Greenland” by the U.S.
The countries mentioned by Trump have expressed support for Denmark, cautioning that a U.S. military takeover of a NATO territory could jeopardize the military alliance led by Washington. Trump hinted at using the tariffs as a bargaining chip to initiate discussions with Denmark and other European nations regarding the status of Greenland, which he deems crucial for U.S. national security.
