Freddie Flintoff’s son Rocky beat his old man’s 27-year record as the youngest player to score a century for England’s second team.
England legend Freddie was 20 years old when he hit 104 for England A – the team now known as England Lions – against Kenya in January 1998. That was the same year he made his senior Test debut against South Africa.
Now 47, the former Lancashire stalwart took over as Lions coach in September 2024. The second string have been in Brisbane, and the younger Flintoff starred in a match against a Cricket Australia XI after being called into the squad by his father.
After bowling their opponents out for 214 in the first innings, the Lions lost their first seven wickets for 161 runs. That’s when 16-year-old Rocky took over, though, hitting an eye-catching 108 off just 127 balls.
Flintoff junior was eventually caught by Ryan Hackney off the bowling of Gabe Bell. By that point, though, England Lions had opened up a lead of more than 100 runs.
Cricket Australia won the first match against the Lions, claiming victory by seven wickets at the Ian Healy Oval. On that occasion, Rocky was dismissed for 19 in the first innings and four in the second.
The teenager was joined by Josh Tongue in the line-up for the second match. 27-year-old bowler Tongue made his senior test debut when England faced Ireland in 2023, taking 5-66 on his bow.

“We have rewarded players who have proven themselves at this level and those with significant potential,” England men’s performance director Ed Barney said when the touring squad was announced in December. “Matches and tours of Australia are always important and we relish the opportunity to test ourselves against quality opposition. This tour allows us to evaluate performances, refine preparation and continue working with some of the best emerging talent in the country.
“I’m also delighted to see Josh Tongue returning to competitive cricket. Josh has had a challenging time with injuries but is progressing well and will benefit from this tour as he steps up his preparation. We hope this marks the start of a prosperous and impactful return to cricket for him in 2025.”
Rocky Flintoff’s century comes hot on the heels of another ton for Lancashire’s second string in April 2024. He signed his first professional contract with the county last summer and has already tasted first-class action.
England Lions have one more match to come on their tour of Australia. They’re up against Australia A on January 29, with the match due to take place at Cricket Central in Sydney.
