Say the word medium and you probably imagine an elderly woman holding a séance. But clairvoyance has had something of a facelift thanks to psychics trending on social media – with some being given their own TV shows. Popular series include Netflix‘s Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry who has over three million Instagram followers. Closer to home, the UK’s Jackie Dennison fronts Rescue Mediums on the Oprah Winfrey Network. With this upsurge in interest, it’s no surprise that 23 per cent of us admit to consulting a medium, according to a YouGov poll.

A new study from the University of Leeds also found that 76 per cent of those questioned believe the soul continues after death. The researchers spent 18 months talking to audience members at mediumship nights in pubs in England and drew the conclusion that participants, “benefited psychologically from a sense of closure, hope and comfort”. But mediums can do much more than pass on vague messages from the beyond, as these women reveal…

I’d never had the urge to visit a medium, but a friend raved about Megan and said I had to book a session. I’d no expectations for the £42 reading and didn’t even go with any questions. Even so, Megan quickly connected with a woman in spirit and said, “I have your birth mother here. Do I have permission to bring her through?”

I was stunned, I was adopted at three months old but Megan didn’t know my history. However, my parents were always open about my adoption, and 20 years earlier I’d started looking for my birth mother, and sister, but hit a brick wall. I said, ‘yes, bring her through’. Megan said, “Your birth mother wants you to pick up the search and look for your family. Your sister is desperate to find you.” Megan added that my birth mother wanted me to visit her grave. I agreed, thinking she’d be buried locally.

The reading was on the Friday, the next day I visited my library with Simon and used Ancestory.co.uk for free. Within 10 minutes, I’d discovered that my birth mother, half-sister and brother had emigrated to Australia and that’s why I couldn’t find anything about them in the UK. The site gave me my mother’s address plus dates of birth; on the Sunday I searched Facebook for my sister and found a woman with the same name and date of birth. I sent a message, thinking it was a long shot.

But on the Monday, just three days after Megan’s reading, I received a Facebook message from Sue saying: “It’s me. I know who you are. I am your sister and when can we speak?” I was thrilled and talked to Sue, 60, the same day. We connected immediately and chatted about our brother Christopher, 58, and I discovered another brother David, 52.

I saw Megan in July 2022 and in March 2023 I flew to Australia to meet my long-lost family, which was lovely. My mother Marguerite died in 2018, but I kept my promise and visited her grave in Campbelltown, near Sydney. I’ve visited Australia three times and Sue has stayed with me twice, and we talk weekly on the phone. Most recently, my siblings came over for my birthday in May last year and we all had readings with Megan.

Growing up I was an only child, but thanks to Megan’s reading I found my lost sister and two brothers – plus nine nieces and nephews. Having a family is amazing, it’s been a dream come true for me and I’ll always be grateful to Megan.

I visited a medium in my 20s out of curiosity, but it was a bland experience. Then, I had another reading that had a profound impact on me. Eight years ago, I moved into a Victorian terrace with Mike, he’d lived at the property for five years. Although I’d stayed at the house before, I’d never noticed anything strange. The problems started a year after I moved in when the loft was converted, the building work seemed to stir things up. At first I felt a subtle presence, a sense of being watched, although the spirit didn’t bother me because it wasn’t scary.

But after a few weeks, my son Kai, then three, started to get increasingly upset at being in the loft alone. He would cry and say a shadow was watching him, my stepdaughter Lois, five, saw the spirit too. The children aren’t prone to making things up. Soon, , you could never make-out what was being said but the noise was unmistakable, and creepy. Upstairs had a heavy, horrible feeling too. Mike noticed the strange feeling and heard the voices.

One day, I was in the kitchen with my friend Cat and the top of a juice bottle flew across the room. Cat couldn’t believe it and left quickly. This event, after 12 months of ghostly activity, was the final straw. I found Jackie online and she offered to do a free house clearing and move any spirits into the light. At the time, I’d no idea Jackie was co-host of Rescue Mediums. She was down-to-earth and got on with the job. A few days later, she spent an hour walking around the house filling it with light.

She found two spirits, people who’d lived in the property, and explained to them they were scary to us and needed to pass over. Luckily, the spirits moved into the light quickly. Almost immediately, the property’s energy felt lighter and we had no more problems. Last year, Mike and I decided to move and the house sold quickly. I’m convinced that if Jackie hadn’t moved the spirits on the property would have struggled to sell – leaving us stuck. People ultimately buy a home on a feeling, I’m not sure ours had the right vibe before it was cleansed!

I have my dream job as a stunt co-ordinator and over the past 15 years I’ve worked with Keanu Reeves, Tom Cruise and Tom Hardy. But the film industry is competitive, you never know when or where your next job will be. Luckily, I have Cara Crompton to guide me. I see Cara every six months and she’s always spot on about upcoming projects.

I met Cara four years ago when I’d just returned from Hollywood, I thought my stunt career was over. I felt a failure, if I’m honest. I’d come back to the UK with Ruby to be nearer family. I’d suffered a horrible birth, we both nearly died, and had taken time out to heal myself. Cara knew nothing about me, but during my first reading she picked up on Ruby’s traumatic birth. She added, “You’ve a big opportunity coming up. Things for you in the stunt world aren’t over.”

Cara saw jobs on film projects in Belgium and Germany, I thought ‘no way’, but both came to fruition within six months. Typically, though, Cara’s predictions manifest within eight weeks. At other times, Cara has given me the names of directors I’m going to work with. I’ve learnt to look out for jobs that match up. Aside from work, Cara warned me about a woman in my social circle who couldn’t be trusted. Again this prediction came true, and forewarned meant I didn’t get burnt.

I’ve asked Cara where her information comes from, she said from her guide who’s an 18th century singer. Cara trusts her guide and I trust Cara. She really boosted my confidence when I was at an all-time low, thankfully, I’m in a different place now. Although I value Cara’s gifts, she charges from £75 for a 90-minute reading, so I don’t run every decision by her. Mediums are someone who can guide you, but it’s important to make your own choices and use free will to experience life.
